The Texts

His Holiness the Dalai Lama has chosen to discuss a practical aspect of Buddha Dharma selecting two major works as the main topic of the forthcoming teachings: «Stages of Meditation» (Bhavanakrama) by Kamalashila and «Concise Lamrim» (Lamrim dudon) by Je Tsongkhapa.

«Stages of Meditation» (Bhavanakrama) is a three-part treatise written by the Indian Buddhist scholar Kamalashila in Tibet in 8th century at the request of Tibetan emperor Trisong Detsen.

The booklets with Russian, Latvian and English translation of  «Stages of Meditation» (second part) and «Concise Lamrim» will be distributed among participants for further study and contemplation. It explains a method of gradual spiritual development practiced by the adepts of Nalanda as opposed to an idea of “instantaneous enlightenment” that was well-spread in China and was brought to Tibet.

Attaching great importance to Kamalashila’s views on gradual application of meditation, His Holiness the Dalai Lama frequently teaches on the second part of “Bhavanakrama” all over the world.

«Concise Lamrim» (Lamrim dudon)

Je Tsongkhapa, founder of  the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism  has been respected in Tibet on a par to Buddha. Among his most prominent works are “Treatises on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment” (Lamrim) available in extensive, middle-length and concise versions.

Starting out from the deep understanding of philosophical legacy of Nalanda as well as his own spiritual experience, Je Tsongkhapa gave there a systematic exposition of the entire spiritual path up to the enlightenment.

The booklets with Russian, Latvian and English translation of «Stages of Meditation» (Bhavanakrama) and «Concise Lamrim» (Lamrim dudon) will be distributed among participants for further study and contemplation.
